Becoming an Egg Donor in Northern California

If you are looking for a unique way to give back while also receiving financial compensation, becoming an egg donor might be your calling. Whether you’re from San Francisco, Sacramento, Palo Alto, or anywhere else in Northern California, Fertility Source Companies can help you navigate the process of becoming an egg donor.

Why Become an Egg Donor in Northern California

Many people choose to become egg donors because they feel a deep sense of compassion and empathy for those who are unable to have a child on their own. The vast majority of donors describe it as a hugely rewarding experience. Egg donors are also financially compensated for their time and effort, giving them more freedom and flexibility to pursue their own goals. People who become egg donors also get to undergo an extremely comprehensive health exam at no cost to them.

Egg Donor Requirements in Northern California

Before being accepted into our egg donor program, potential donors must fulfill specific requirements to be considered. Some of these parameters are dictated by the regulations set forth by the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research within the US Food and Drug Administration, which governs the use of donated human cells or tissues. Other egg donor requirements are based on the guidelines outlined by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology.

The Egg Donation Process

The process begins with the egg donor intake application – a privacy-protected online form that the egg donor candidate fills out. The application features a wide range of personal questions regarding the donor's medical, social, sexual, and family history. We strongly recommend that those who are considering becoming egg donors closely review our egg donor requirements before filling out their application.

Once our case managers have received your application, they review it and determine your eligibility. If accepted as an egg donor, one of our case managers will coordinate a mandatory new donor consultation to go over the egg donation process in detail. We will also start setting up your egg donor profile which will be featured in our secure database for intended parents to view. The database is set up so that intended parents can search for and select egg donors based on various characteristics.

Once selected, the egg donor undergoes a series of appointments, including:

  • A psychological evaluation
  • A meeting with a reproductive attorney to sign a donor contract
  • A full medical evaluation (e.g. physical exam, blood work, and vaginal ultrasound)

Next, your cycle will be synchronized with the cycle of the recipient, typically using birth control and Lupron, which is a self-injectable medication that is used regulate ovulation. You will be taught ahead of time how to inject the medications, which will help make the experience more comfortable.

After synchronization, you will take fertility medications to stimulate ovarian activity. Like Lupron, fertility medications are self-administered via injection. The fertility medications are the same that are used in IVF. Egg donors will take them every day on a set schedule for about 10 days. During this time, you will also visit a fertility clinic every other day for egg follicle monitoring. Around the tenth day, your eggs should be just about ready for retrieval.

At this point, your doctor will instruct you to take the final injection, known as a “trigger” shot, to prep your ovaries and egg follicles for retrieval. The timing of this injection is carefully coordinated to be administered about 34 hours before your scheduled retrieval procedure. During the procedure itself, you are placed under sedation while the doctor uses a transvaginal ultrasound to guide a thin aspirating needle to the ovaries to collect the mature eggs from their follicles. The procedure takes about 30 minutes to complete and you are monitored closely throughout the entire time. Recovery is generally pretty straightforward, with most donors returning to their regular activities the next day. After the process is completed, you will receive your compensation in the mail.
