Electro-acupuncture boosts IVF success in study

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

(Reuters Health) – Women who have an electro-acupuncture session as part of their infertility treatment may have a better chance of ultimately having a baby, a new clinical trial suggests.

The study, of 309 women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF), found that those who had electro-acupuncture at the time that their embryos were implanted were more likely to give birth.

Just over 37 percent had a baby (or babies), versus 21 percent of women who underwent a “sham” version of electro-acupuncture.

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Maria Menounos is a red carpet regular, known for her A-list interviews.
But the “Extra” co-host became the center of attention herself after she went public with her decision to have her eggs frozen as a way to assure her fertility in the future.
“To me, parenting is the most difficult job in the entire world, and when I do it, I want to be committed, and I want to be 100 percent ready to take it on and be the best mom I can be,” Menounos, 33, said today on “Good Morning America.” “Right now, I don’t find myself in that position.”

A New Openness For Donor Kids About Their Biology

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

First in a two-part report.

Women inseminated with a donor’s sperm used to be advised to tell no one. Go home, doctors said, make love to your husband and pretend that worked. But in a trend that mirrors that of adoption — from secrecy to openness — more parents now do plan to tell such children how they were conceived and are seeking advice on how best to do that.

Tina Gulbrandson understands the temptation of secrecy. She felt stigma and pain when she needed to use another woman’s eggs to get pregnant.

“You feel incompetent,” she says. “You feel like you failed, as a woman.”

‘Birds & Bees’ Campaign Goes Viral to End Infertility Stigma

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Infertility is not usually a topic that is discussed publicly, but a new campaign is hoping to change that by erasing the stigma attached to it.
EMD Serono, a biopharmaceutical company, has produced a campaign on Facebook titled “Birds and the Bees: The Real Story.”
Part of the campaign features a music video, “Early Bird Catches the Sperm,” reminiscent of a digital short on “Saturday Night Live.”

NY Assemblymember plans sperm bank regulation bill

Monday, September 12th, 2011

No, it’s not a headline we use all that often (as opposed to, say, “New charges for Espada”): Assemblywoman Deborah Glick, apparently responding to a much-read recent NYT story about a sperm donor with at least 150 progeny, plans to introduce a bill setting limits on the the number of children conceived from a single donor.

The as-yet-unwritten legislation — which Glick says will be introduced for the 2012 session — would establish “a required registry at each sperm bank that provides a means for gathering accurate information on that number. In addition, the accurate and detailed health information for each donor must be available to IVF children.”

“While the best possible solution would be federal controls that prevent circumventing state by state laws, we cannot wait to address the obvious problem that has developed. For some years we have heard of young people seeking out their half siblings and a growing number of web based registries and search groups. There needs to be a standard of behavior for all sperm banks,” Glick said in a statement.

“I intend to work with all of the stakeholders in this arena to ensure that we take into account all the concerns that people may have and to handle them with the sensitivity this subject demands,” Glick concluded.

A Manhattan Democrat, Glick became the first openly gay member of the state Legislature when she took office in 1990.

A Canadian radio station has been condemned as ‘unethical and insulting’ over a competition in which listeners can ‘win a baby’.
Ottowa’s Hot 89.9 has vowed to pay for a three rounds of IVF to the person who makes the best case to them.
All contestants have to do is write in 100 words or less why they want a child and and a panel of judges will pick the most persuasive.
