Supporting Jenner

Standing up in support of Jenner and our trans sisters and brothers.  I’d like to share an article by the founder of Camp Aranu’tiq – Nicholas Teich.  I met Nick two summers ago as a volunteer.  Along with a brilliantly brave staff, we served 75 trans and gender variant campers for an overnight summer camp where they were able to just be KIDS at camp.  This community has grown much larger and able to reach even more youth.

#TearTheLabel

It’s amazing how one disheartening act can spiral into countless acts of support and empowerment.  Such is the case with the recent controversy involving Dolce & Gabanna – Where Domenico Dolce called children conceived using IVF “synthetic children.”

The way this comment has not been dismissed but has been addressed with poignant commentary regarding respect of all people, families and birth stories, has been inspiring.  I am particularly intrigued by the #TearTheLabel campaign happening, where Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson is auctioning off designer clothing to raise money and awareness for couples who cannot afford to utilize IVF treatments.  Celebrities are joining in the cause and donating their designer pieces to this auction.

Irish Politics

As Ireland approaches election time, there is buzz amidst surrounding surrogacy law.  At this time, surrogacy is not legally protected in Ireland – and although there isn’t speculation that movement on this issue will happen before the election, the issue is certainly on the radar.  Some in opposition of same-sex marriage are bundling up the issue of surrogacy law within their dissent – Even though surrogacy does not primarily benefit same sex couples.  The same rhetoric that has been spewed against LGBTQ people for other rights is being spewed here – Supporting “traditional family values,” means keeping those radical queers from reproducing.  (I’m not bitter I promise)

There are a number of complications when considering the ethics of surrogacy far beyond

Here is an interesting piece about this issue and some other complications being discussed at this decisive time.

GAYpril

I have to say…It has been a HUGE week for the LGBT community – Particularly in terms of same sex marriage reaching the SUPREME COURT.

It almost feels surreal to me – I remember that bittersweet moment in 2004 when we celebrated Massachusetts legalizing gay marriage and feeling some sort of tug about this being a state issue instead of a federal issue.  Where would we be today if slavery was determined a state issue?  And today, being at the precipice of decision – I have good faith that state bans of same sex marriage will be deemed unconstitutional…And I frankly am not ready to entertain other options.

I have been watching some of the news around this and wanted to air out a particularly challenging media piece I have stumbled upon.  Not surprising, James Dobson is rallying, organizing, protesting everything I believe in.  From same sex unions to Spongebob Squarepants – This guy and his team really like yucking my yum.  But this time, Dobson and other evangelical leaders and conservative politicians are standing up and threatening civil disobedience if things don’t go their way.  It is starting, and it is troubling.

I love a great debate, and people getting revved up about what they believe in is the cornerstone of democracy – But violence in response to marriage equality is not only not okay, it does not support any arguments of validity for the people that enact them.  May I once again commend the tech companies that have stood up against inequality?  In case you missed that one, read about it HERE.

In the end of it all, let’s not lose the celebration.  A victory has occurred that this issue is being heard.

Resource Spotlight: Living the “New Normal”

There are lots (and LOTS) of things you need to know as you start out on a family building journey through egg donation and/or surrogacy. And we hope that you’ll consider allowing  The Fertility SOURCE Companies (The Donor SOURCE & The Surrogacy SOURCE) to help you on these fronts. We want to make this journey as smooth as possible for you as well as support you in a way that fits your unique family building needs.

However, along with the long list of things you’ll need to know there are also some things you’ll need during this time that are more “felt” than “known.” One of the most significant things in this category is feeling that you’re not alone and that you have community around to help you process the ups and downs of this incredible journey! Here at The Fertility SOURCE Companies we understand that there is no substitute for community which is why we’re trying to explore and engage with the LGBT community to see how they’re building families and what their needs are. Even though this may be outside of what an agency traditionally does, we believe that you feeling supported in this journey is enough reason for us to help you find affirming space where it’s already available and thriving!

Supreme Court Takes on Gay Marriage

Wow.  The day has finally come – Well, that day actually came on Friday but like many of us I’ve been celebrating rather than writing about it.  Sorry to play catchup but I’m sure you all understand.

Drumroll please…..

The Supreme Court has taken up the case of same sex marriage at a federal level!

Taking cases from the Federal 6th Circuit (to include the states of Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan, and Kentucky,)  the ruling made will likely (hopefully) completely decimate any final shreds of DOMA, addressing the 14 states that have yet to legalize same sex marriages.

If things go well, the inconsistencies throughout the nation will be remedied and parents and children can be recognized.

Parents will be able to bring their children into the world with fewer legal complications: For instance legal fees, home studies and background checks that come with adopting your child as a non-carrying parent in a dual female relationship.

Families will be able to travel through previously non-recognition states and have their relationships recognized – In the case of injury or sickness, families can concern themselves with addressing the need of the ailing person, not with proving their right to do so.

It is likely that I am preaching to the choir here, as families who have fought for rights, recognition and safety – This has been a big piece of the inequality pie.

We will be watching closely as this starts to filter through and keep you up to speed.  If you are one who enjoys the more in depth legal speak, there is a great article from a family law attorney in Jacksonville on this issue.  Read it HERE.

So congrats all.

If you haven’t already…hug your partner, your kiddos, your dogs – whoever makes up your family in celebration of this conversation we have been waiting to have for far too long.

In solidarity,

Skye
